15 days, 15 Lyft/Uber/taxis, 8 airplanes, 4 cities, 2 trains, 1 sprained ankle and somehow, I have maintained a reasonable level of sanity on this trip. A few travel apps are instrumental to my mental and physical health:
- UberEATS. I started using this app two months ago, and it has changed the way I eat on the road. Every fall I experience a steady weight gain from eating 3 restaurant meals a day. Until now. UberEATS is the new room service. I’m still eating restaurant food, but I make better and healthier choices. Need to work in the evening after the trade show? No time to go out to dinner? Have you had it with the breakfast choices in your hotel? Need to order food, but don’t want the usual food delivery options? Choose from bunches of local restaurants and have an Uber driver deliver to the hotel lobby – or wherever you are! This particular trip had me working late most evenings, but I didn’t feel left out of the local food scene. With UberEATS I can make controlled and researched decisions with nutrition info and popular suggestions — and that evil server tempting you with dessert after the meal isn’t there. My favorite UberEATS so far is Zedrics: Fit with Flavor in San Antonio. Delicious healthy food — they even have zoodles!
- MINDBODY. Missing yoga class? Find a studio near you wherever you are and book it through the MINDBODY app. You can also find other exercise studios and gyms, even spas for a little pampering. Yoga and pilates classes in my hometown keep me grounded and anxiety attacks in check. Not to mention I develop various travel injuries from extended time on the road, so I invested in a lightweight travel yoga mat (shout out to Manduka!). My favorite studio for the past 3 years is Yoga Loft in Chicago.
- OpenTable. You didn’t sprain your ankle – good work! You’ve just arrived in a new place, and you need a glass of wine and a decent meal. What is open? What’s good? What isn’t already full? Enter OpenTable. Search for available tables at nearby restaurants and read restaurant reviews from verified users. Make a reservation right there. Crowded convention in town (my life)? Make reservations ahead without calling around trying to find a place to accommodate your group. Now sit back, and enjoy how everyone thinks you “have connections.” How else did you score us a table on such short notice?
- Plant Nanny. Flying in airplanes, spending long days in convention halls, running your hotel air conditioner, eating salty restaurant food or walking in the summer heat. All things that dehydrate you. Admit it, you don’t drink enough water. Plant nanny makes it fun with cute plants that you water virtually as you drink water through the day. It’s customized to how much water you should drink for your weight. Stay hydrated and feel better! I know, it’s kind of annoying. Now to load an app that helps me find the nearest restroom at all times…
